Jasper County

Jasper County is the southernmost county of the U.S. state of South Carolina. It was formed in 1912 from portions of Hampton County and Beaufort County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 24,777. Its county seat is Ridgeland.

Jasper County is included within the Hilton Head Island–Beaufort Micropolitan Statistical Area, though over 80% of the county population is classified as rural.

Historically, in contrast to neighboring Beaufort County, Jasper was one of the poorest counties in the state. Recent development from 2000 onwards has given the county new residents, expanded business opportunities, and a wealthier tax base.

Jasper county is largely rural, with only about 18% of the population residing in the Ridgeland Urban Cluster. However, the region of the county near Bluffton and Hilton Island Island (towns within Beaufort County) is growing in population, and now Jasper County is included within the Hilton Head Island-Beaufort Micropolitan Area, as classified by the U.S. Census Bureau.
